In the horror movie John Carpenter’s The Thing, the opening scene is a shot of mountains surrounded by an arctic tundra. This is the beginning of the theme for the rhythmic montage of this movie. Almost all of the shots have a background that show the enormity of the setting that the characters are in. The helicopter is scaled against the mountain and against a giant valley of snow. The dog that is being chased is shown with the huge field of snow, and when he runs, he is seen from the helicopter’s viewpoint to once again signify the size of the setting.
