The self-portrait has been used throughout history as a way for the artist to not just show off their abilities but to show people something about themselves. It reveals a sort of hidden knowledge about the individual. A self-portrait can also show certain traits of the artist’s personality.
This self portrait also focuses on the positive space by filling up the whole image and not leaving any negative space to make up a background. Some might argue this messes with the sense of depth in the image but the value is what I wanted to use to create depth within this piece.
This self portrait has a lot to do with working with value. The different grey tones contrast to the stark white and the deep black.
